Kuala Lumpur Rat Race 2007

I saw this advertisement above in the Sun newspaper on Wednesday 1 August with mixed feeling. This colourful, full-paged and attention-grabbing advertisement is about this year’s Kuala Lumpur Executive Rat Race. The date of event falls on Tuesday 7 August, less than one week from now.

2006 Champion Team goes to RHB Bank - Yours truly is at left

This year, the Penguin runners will not be representing the Bank. They are: Yours truly (p1), Meng (p2), Tony (p3) and Steven (p5). At this time last year, we would have lots of actions and peaked in our training.

The Bank decided to downsize the participation by sending fewer teams. Last year, the Bank sent in 12 teams – the largest contingent by far from a single company in the history of Kuala Lumpur Executive Rat Race.

I really enjoyed myself running in the Rat Race. It is a 5-km fun run of charity type participated by corporate companies where the collections will be donated to various charitable organizations. Though the event is non-competitive in nature, being runners, we run at maximum speed. One unique requirement: the participants are running in office attire; only the shoes are in running shoes.
.

The participants are treated to a display of pomp and splendour at the starting point, very much in a carnival mood. Lining along the course will be numerous cheerleading teams and supporters cheering or jeering the runners.

I have been running in this race for the past three consecutive years and I am lucky to be in the Champion Team in 2005 and 2006. Amidst the good news, the bad news was that I sustained heel pain in last year’s run. To date, I am still enduring the pain in solitude. Well, they say there is the price to pay for having too much good time.

Wishing all runners a memorable run with lots of fun in the coming event.

Chan Wing Kai, Pacesetters Club photographer, informed me that he will be there taking photos. So, put on your best smiles (though you may be struggling in the thick of action), will ya?
